I enjoyed being with my songs last night. All of my compilations represent different seasons of my life, and my songs are like a diary as I thought back on it all.
I was listening to an old song on a compilation from years ago that I know can be better. We “missed” it years ago. So, I stayed up last night working on it and can’t wait to record it again to get it right.
Every song tells a story, and then that song coming to life (correctly) is a story, and then whatever is meant to be with the recording afterwards takes on another life of its own, and the entire process is all just wonderful.
When I moved to Nashville at 17, I knew I could write (from awards I had gotten in high school) but never moved there as a songwriter. I said to a famous songwriter one day (at age 19), “It must be the best feeling on earth to write a song.” I will never forget his response. He smiled and said, “You are a songwriter, Dwayna. You just don’t know it yet. You would never say such a thing if you were not a writer yourself.” Turns out, we both were right. It’s the best feeling on earth to write a song.
It’s a long story as to why I ended up leaving “the music industry” years ago, but I am so thankful that God never let the music leave me.
I sure did have a good night last night, up late with my songs. Other than feeling God’s love when I pray, there is no greater feeling on earth than writing a song.
